i return to the white house more determined and more inspired than ever about the work we need to do and the future that lies ahead. >> president barack obama elected to a second term vowing to unit a bitterly divided nation. get ready to pay more taxes. why californians say it's worth it and how governor jerry brown convinced them to do it. we are live in san jose where we have the results on several important measures here in the county you may be surprised at what passed and what didn't. many of you voted for warmer weather and you got it but now the results are coming in and it will be colder. we'll talk about that ktvu channel 2 news coming up.

good morning. welcome to wednesday it's november 7th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. day after election day. let's start with steve paulson. i voted for warm weather. i'm glad we have two more days. >> no. >> we're done? >> we're done. already the fog has come back to the coast. there will be a big change in that weather pattern. fog is coming back to the coast and rain as well. highs today 60s and 70s. check out this amazing picture of this spectacular crash. a big wig heading eastbound slammed into center divide. the crash sent chunks of concrete into the westbound lanes. two other cars were involved in the crash. the driver of a chevy tahoe was taken to the hospital. a semi carrying mail was involved in the crash but no mail was lost. we had huge backups yesterday on 80 as a result. this is a look at the golden gate bridge. a live picture.

a lot of fog on the span so use care. 5:01 let's go back to the desk. all right it's four more years for president obama. final results still being counted but here is the -- we have the electoral map results. the state of florida is the only one remaining too close to call. the president has at least 303 electoral votes. 270 are needed to win the white house. thousands of supporters cored as the president, first lady, and daughters emerged at their victory party. in his victory speech president obama spoke about working with both sides of the aisle. >> we are greater than the sum of our individual ambitions and we remain more than a collection of red states and blue states. we are and forever will be the united states of america. >> the president and his family spent the night in chicago. they will return to the white house though this afternoon.

there was also a very large receive brace filled with chants and cheers at sprawl plaza. for many students in the crowd they are excited this is their first time to vote. >> it's been a long time waiting. it was a really long line. and it took awhile to get through there. you feel like you did something. it's definitely worth it. >> cal campus residents hall posted polling stations. students in berkeley were still in line to vote though after the polls closed at 8:00 p.m.. time now 5:03. as you heard mitt romney lost his bid to become president but during his concession speech, he urged the nation's leader reach across the aisle and work together. the former massachusetts governor made that concession speech just after midnight after he called president obama and congratulating him on his

victory. romney told the supporters he and running mate paul ryan gave everything they had to the campaign. >> i so wish i had been able to fulfill your hopes to lead the country in a different direction, but the nation shows another leader and so ann and i join with you to pray for him and this great nation. >> now mitt romney also thanked his wife, his sons, his staffers for all of their support and running mate paul ryan will return to washington after voters in wisconsin reelected him to represent the state's first district. now bay area republicans were left sad and disappointed. about 100 republicans gathered in walnut creek at masimos's restaurant. they watched the returns. however the celebration they planned never happened. after president obama's victory was announced many simply headed home. >> it's a pretty sad night here in the republican. there is a lot of people here thought romney communicated a

message that resinated with america and disappointed he did not prevail. >> ironically i'm not feeling quite as sad as i thought i would. several of my dearest friends almost made me cry but not quite. >> while they are sad about romney's defeat republicans also point to other victories like maintaining control of the house of the representatives. the election did not change the balance of power on capitol hill. democrats they still controlled the u.s. senate. the republicans still controlled the house of representatives. coming up at 5:15 what that means for lawmakers moving ahead and for gridlock in washington. >> governor jerry brown is claiming victory for what he calls the california dream. voters have approved proposition 30 his education tax initiative. you can see on the screen. 54% to 46%. and that is with -- actually that is all of the precincts

reporting out. tara moriarty is in san francisco with what the vote means for california's public schools. >> reporter: we are standing in front of mission high school. and it is one of the oldest in fact the oldest high school in san francisco and it's struggling but the students here may now benefit from prop 30 passage. san francisco voters overwhelmingly supported the measure as did folks in alameda and santa cruz. they all raise the states sales tax by a quarter of a cent for four years and increase income taxes for people that make $250,000 a year by up to three percentage points. it's projected to raise $6 billion a year for schools. >> when i ran for governor, i did say i said three things. one, i want to level with you tell you the truth no more smoke and mirrors on the budget. two, we're not going to have any taxes unless the people themselves vote for it.

and three we're going to move government as close as we can to local punts and into the people -- local communities and to the people. >> reporter: brown made prop 30 the focus of his administration spending the year trying to convince voters to try to pass it. his efforts were made a little difficult as they approved a rail line and had a hidden stash of state park funds. so what do voters think? why they say it won't solve all of their problems and in seven years they will be right back where they started. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. >> californians rejected rival tax measure proposition 38 on your screen. 72% voting no. 28% voting yes. it was funded by millionaire attorney and would have raised the taxes for middle and upper tax income households. time is 5:07. now our election coverage moves to the south bay.

janine de la vega is live in san jose to tell us more about some of the local ballot pressures. janine. >> reporter: dave, a lot of these measures centered around money. one of the most talked about measures here in santa clara county was measure d. that had to deal with raising the minimum wage and it passed. the registrars office was reporting it won by 59%. that is with 100 precincts reporting. this measure means minimum wage will be raised from $8 an hour to $10 an hour. the measure was developed by a group of san jose state students and also championed by labor groups. opponents argued it would hurt small businesses. now another measure that passed is measure a that raises the sales tax in the company by one eighth of a%. 56% voted yes while 44% voted against it. this will raise $50 million

annually for county programs. this tax is supposed to be in effect for the next ten years. now a measure that did not pass is measure e with let's see 100 precincts reporting 58% of people voted no and 42% voted yes. now this would have allowed the two card rooms in san jose to increase their number of gaming tables. opponents said it would have generated $20 million in tax revenue and it would haves created jobs but opponents argued that more gambling would have resulted in more crime in the city and it would have been more expensive in the long run for the residents. now as the morning goes on while people are getting their morning coffee we plan on talking to them to get some reaction. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega. 5:09 is the time. let's go back over to sal. how is traffic this morning? maybe people sleeping in? >> you know if they stayed up late to watch all the speeches they might be.

so right now we are doing pretty well. there are no major problems out there. let's go out and take a look at the east shore freeway. the traffic here that looks pretty good coming out to the mccarthur maze. no major problems getting out to the maze and the toll plaza. when you get to the toll plaza we had a nice looking drive. no problems. a little bit foggy though. steve and i have been telling you about that. give yourself a little bit of extra time. and this morning in the south bay we are starting off pretty well. northbound 280 traffic looks good. northbound 880 after highway 280 there is a crash. 5:10 let's go to steve. sal, thank you. well, record highs monday and also yesterday. there will not be any today or for awhile. gilroy 91 degrees. san jose 80 degrees. airport 80 degrees. sfo78 degrees. just a few but impressive for this time of year. especially that 91 in gilroy. system coming in the leading edge of the change it's picking

up the fog. be careful. some of the visibility could be lousy here for the day. areas of dense fog. visibility wasn't too bad on my drive in but some of the bridges could have socked in areas of fog. turning colder tonight. the wind was already picking up and it's out of the west. clouds will increase as well. this is not a strong system for rain. but it is a strong system for colder air. temperatures way above average for monday and tuesday. highs on friday will be in the 50s. if you have a little app there on your phone, you're like is that right? yes, it will be right. 40s and 50s yesterday at this time. san francisco 61. 54 and a no doubt about it change in the wind direction from east to northeast to west to southwest. coming down a lot of cold air. which isn't here yet. it has to work its way in. system back east is producing wind to 50 miles an hour. upper 30s saw a lot of cold rain. outed canceled a bunch of flights. this system is not that strong

but it's on top of what they had a week ago. it doesn't help anything. for us our system moves through tonight and then we set the stage for some off and on rain. not a big rain around this system. today fog, sun, cooler. 70s and 60s on the temps. that is it for the 80s. and we'll see temperatures continue to slide down on the coast. does look like some showers might make it in here thursday. maybe a cold, kind of rainy pattern on friday. very chilly on the temps. the weekend recovering but very cold in the morning. time now 5:12. there was more street violence? san jose. the very latest on an overnight shooting. nancy pelosi napa home targeted by thieves. the damage caused by the break in. some of the election results still coming in. right now voters approved prop 39. this would require multistate businesses to base their income tax liability on the percentage of their sales here in california. time now 5:15. new yorkers were able to follow last nights election results just by looking up at the empire state building. led lights displayed the winner in each state as the results were coming in. that fame the symbol of new york city was it will up in blue after president obama was reelected. the u.s. senate is is more blue this morning. california among others has reelected senator dianne feinstein to a fourth term.

she defeated little known republican elizabeth emken of danville. feinstein was very emotional. she hugged her family during the victory party in san francisco. while her landslide victory was predicted she did become a bit emotional when her grandmother introduced her on stage. >> you have no idea what that introduction meant to me. and how emotional it is and how very wonderful it is to have you as my granddaughter. >> thank you. >> so thank you. >> i love you. >> 78-year-old senator feinstein raised more than $9 million. voters decided not to shake up congress last night despite approval ratings that are in the gutter. republicans will keep control of the house, democrats maintain their majority in the senate. ktvu alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom with the political landscape emerging this morning on capitol hill. >> reporter: pam, earlier this year republicans thought the

united states senate and total control of congress was within their reach. but that did not happen. let's take a look here at the latest tally for the u.s. senate democrats have kept the majority with 51 seats. republicans have 45. there are two independence, two seats are too close to call. there were dramatic upsets. democrats captured republicans seats in massachusetts and indiana as elizabeth warren defeated scott brown and democratic representative joe donnelly defeated richard murdock who said conception by rape was god's will. we caught up with patty murphy. she said both parties must move beyond the election toward bipartisan ship. >> the republicans have to start working with us to solve the budget problem and not just keep saying the wealthy don't participate. >> reporter: and even though democrats did pick up a few seats in the house republicans stay in charge.

house speaker john boehner sent us a statement. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. house minority leader nancy pelosi is reelected before congress. her napa home was burglarized on monday when no one was there. sheriffs deputies responded after thieves triggered an alarm. when they arrived they found smashed glass from the front door and the pool house door. it's unclear if they got away with anything and no arrests have been made. overnight news. overnight shooting in san jose left a man seriously injured. it happened around 9:30 last night. at first police said two men were shot. but only one victim was found. he was rushed to the hospital. he has life threatening injuries. back in august another man was shot and injured at that very same intersection. in frees low investigator

-- fresno investigators are still trying to determine the motive of a deadly shooting at a meat processing plant. he shot two of his coworker. killed two of them and wounded two others. jones had a criminal record that dates back to the '90s including several sents in prison. it appears those victims were targeted. let's take it back over to the traffic center for a look at commute. we are looking pretty good out there so far any way. a little bit of fog to deal with though. let's go out to the live pictures. highway 24 here looks pretty good between walnut creek and oakland. the fog in lafayette is not all that thick. it should be okay for your drive here. at the bay bridge toll plaza traffic is light with no major problems coming into the city.

no problems on the lower deck of the bay bridge either. and if you're driving in san jose northbound and southbound 101 that traffic looks very nice driving through the san jose area. let's go to steve. all right, sal, thank you. yesterday some of the record highs this is it. monday and tuesday temperatures came in and sored up for some. gilroy 91 degrees. san jose 80. oakland downtown. airport set record highs. sfo at 78 degrees. there were plenty though. our system that is giving us the change is just move into the northern part of the state. it's not very strong but temperatures which were 10-15 degrees above normal will now start to slide down to normal today and go way below on thursday into friday. in fact, we'll see 50s for high temps on friday. very cold air mass moves in here. 50s or 40s on the temps. we had low 60s on the coast for lows. that will not the be the case. our system will give increasing

clouds to the north bay. a little bit later rob that is what is upstream. that will give us some showery activity late tonight but more likely into tomorrow and friday. again this doesn't have a lot of rain with it but it does have lot of cold air. fog, sun, cooler. westerly breeze. fog on the coast. so watch out. 60s and 70s for temperatures today. in fact, they will be continuing to come down. gilroy 91 yesterday. 62 half-moon bay. santa cruz 67. kind of a rainy, cool breeze on friday. we kick out the clouds most of them on saturday. the days will be okay. morning and nights will be very brisk. time now 5:21. a san francisco gun club now has a new deal on a new lease. why some wanted that gun club kicked out. the unexpected switch some people ran into while trying to cast their votes for president.

welcome back. time now 5:24. the poll workers were busy. this year a record number of people asked for mail in ballots. the clerk is saying it could take several days to process mail in ballots that were dropped off on election day. those ballots could make up as much as 20% of the ballots cast. enough to make a difference in a close race. well here's the latest results on measure a in contra

costa county. still very close. measure needs two-thirds to pass. if it's approved, this $11 parcel tax would be levied over the next six years to help fund the community college district. some voters in colorado did run into major problems while trying to cast their votes. one of them happened in pueblo county, colorado. a swing state that president obama won. >> when an individual would pass the romney button, it would come up obama on the printed record. >> and some of them reported this happening just the opposite as well. the machines in question were taken out of use as soon as that problem was noticed. voters were able to recast their ballots. some people in pennsylvania reported similar problems but with votes switched in favor of mitt romney. a san francisco gun club says it has reached an

agreement with the city on a new lease. the pacific gun club says it would be allow to stay in the 14-acre state for two more years. the announcement comes as the cloud negotiates with the city with cleanup cost is -- cleanup costs. what is happening on 280? >> it's a little slow in some areas. traffic on 280 northbound right at 17 looks good but the fog is a little low in some areas as steve and i will tell you. it's not like it was yesterday where it was pretty clear and the temperatures are cooler. we'll let steve handle that. let's move along and take a look at the commute on the sunol grade very slow. let's go to steve. all right, sal, thank you. i was just updating my graphic there. we do have a little change here. the fog has come back to the coast and not only that the wind has turned westerly. so that means goodbye to the east wind or northeast wind and record highs which we had on monday and tuesday.

fog returns breezy and cooler. tonight and tomorrow turning colder. clouds, showers will develop. this is more of a cold system than a rainer. but cold temps. 50s for highs on friday with clouds. there will be some rain here. i think we will notice mainly the cold air. first little part of the system is move into the northern part of the state. it's already picked up some of that fog and increased that. 60s and 70s for temps. an east bay family narrowly escaped the flames from an early morning house fire. what we are learning about the fire that displaced a family of six. and coming up we'll talk about the congressional races. we'll tell you which ones were close and the big upset. our economy has recovered. a decade of war is ending. >> president barack obama elected to a second term in a decisive victory.

our time is 5:32. there are a lot of things to talk about number wise this morning. we have ktvu claudine wong here to show us in detail about the numbers. >> reporter: that is right. let's take you over to the map. this is our congressional districts in the bay area. i want to take you over to the 15th district. we have an upset here. this is pete starks district and has been since the vietnam era. he is the longest serving member of congress. it seems the era is over. let's show you the latest numbers coming from that district. it shows democrat ere rake stall -- erik stallwell the winner of that. the gap became apparent overnight. about one-third this morning he pleaded a thank you to supporters. his win in part being attributed to a top tier system. all right let's take you back to the map. we want to talk about the other

close races. let's talk about what has happened in the third district. he is the winner there. the race closer than expected to be. some people say it was so close that his challenger republican wasn't ready to concede overnight. some other races showing a lot more room in terms of victories. let's go over to district 12. now you can see the results there. nancy pelosi hanging on to her spot there by a commanding 85- 15%. we go to the 13th district move over there you can see barbara lee the winner in that district. and also in the 14th district head over that you can see jackie spear hanging on to her seat. let's go to the 11th holding on to his. and south bay really quickly so we can see.

honda holding on to his seat 73- 22%. pelosi said california would lead the way in terms of gaining more seats but this morning republicans reflew their hold -- renew their hold on the majority. >> thank you claudine. voters rejected a ballot measure to end the death penalty in california. proposition 34 would have replaced the death penalty with life in prison without the possibility of parole. it would also have retro actively applied to the more than 700 people currently on death row in california. but again rejected. now meanwhile voters overwhelmingly passed proposition 36 to ease california's three strikes law. now a mandatory life sentence will only be imposed if the third felony conviction is serious or violent. we are tracking some overnight news out of newark this morning. we've been telling you about firefighters on the scene looking for the cause of a big

house fire. take a look. it started at 2:00 a.m. this morning. a home on marion drive. two people that live in the home say they were awakened by the flames. they managed to grab their four children and get out of the house safely. >> my husband and i and our three-year-old we were asleep in bed and we just saw -- i just woke up and saw red. >> red cross is now helping that family find a place to stay. firefighters believe that the family dog died in the fire. time now 5:36. let's check in with sal see what is happening with our commute. >> we are doing pretty well. we've had not that many problems but we will have slow traffic building. a little bit of fog there. put this picture up to show you it's a little misty. the train just went by there. no major problems by the way if you're in san jose. i want to show you that. the traffic on the peninsula looks pretty good on 101 and

280 and 85. no major problem there is. and across the bay in hayward it's a nice looking drive. also the morning commute looks pretty good. it's still nice and early but there are no problems. let's go to steve. nice weather, record highs monday and tuesday. that all ends today. fog is back and in a big way. low clouds and fog. more of a westerly breeze. that easterly breeze or northerly wind is gone now. that is the direction the wind is coming from. it's coming from the ocean. fog, sun, cooler breezy. cold air doesn't arrive until late tonight into tomorrow morning. just a little slow -- just a little sliver of a system here. monday and tuesday temperatures way above average. we had 70s and 80s and low 90s. everything starts to turn around today and really bottoms out. so 40s and 50s on the temps. 49 in antioch. 51 santa rosa.

54 san francisco. yesterday at this time they were 61. good reason this is a westerly breeze or a west, northwest, or west, southwest all indication of a system up here to the north. there is not a lot with this. we'll get more cold air and wind than any kind of rain. there will be some. probably more likely on friday. see the system inch in. that has moved the fog. plenty of low clouds will be on the coast. here comes that front right there. going through ukiah and the bay area by tonight and watch what happens in upstream. you can see that gets closer. that will be us by friday. it's on its way. there is not a lot. we'll get some off and on rain as we head toward friday. fog, sun, cooler. a westerly wind. fog on the coast. 70s on the temps today or 60s santa cruz. 72 mountain view. san jose 73. after yesterday's 80. colder showers developing later. friday will be the coldest day off and on. highs in the 50s. clear it out slowly on

saturday. sunday looks good but just not very warm. 5:38. mitt romney took the stage in boston just before 1:00 a.m. eastern time to concede the presidential race. now he didn't speak long and gave a speak very different from the one he hoped to give. emily is joining us live in boston. emily. >> reporter: hi, dave, one thing that was not suspenseful last night was where california would give its support. mitt romney was not counting on that. however, he thought he would have enough swing states he would come out on that stage and give a victory speech. it's what he had written. it's the only thing he said he had written. instead he came out spoke for less than five minutes and said he had told president obama congratulations. in the early hours after a long election day, mitt romney said he had called president obama and the race was over. >> i so wish i would have been able to fulfill your hopes to lead the country in a different

direction but the nation chose another leader. ann and i join for you to pray for him and the great nation. >> reporter: the mood was a stark contrast to his announcement in june, 2011. >> i believe in america and i'm running for president. >> reporter: and to the crowds that welcomed him on a last minute election day trip to the critical swing states of ohio and pennsylvania. >> thank you. thank you for your work. gosh you guys are fabulous. >> reporter: neither state went romney's way make it impossible for him to pick up the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. >> nation as you know is at a critical point. the time like this we can't risk partisan bickering and political posturing. >> reporter: president obama congratulated ryan and romney. >> we may have battled piercely but it's only because we love this country fiercely. >> reporter: romney also talked about the country's future. >> i believe in the people of

america. and i ran for office because i'm concerned about america. this election is over but our principals endure. >> reporter: mitt romney said as he was wrapping up his campaign swing yesterday before the results came in. he hadn't given losing much thought but his family was more important to him. meantime here at home in walnut creek a planned big celebration for republican party turned into a night for disappointment. about 1 hurricane people gathered to watch the -- about 100 people gathered to watch result. but after the race was called many left and went home. they said they are sad and disappointed mitt romney had lost. it's now 5:41. the east coast just can't seem to catch a break. the new storm that could cause more flooding and evacuations in new jersey and new york.

also will residents in richmond have to pay a tax on soda. the decision on that hotly debated issue. also more election results right now we want to show you the results of proposition 35 that is an effort to increase prison sentences for human traffickers. it passed overwhelmingly as you can see. we'll be right back.

will return to the white house after celebrating his reelection victory in chicago. in his acceptance speech last night he said he's looking forward to working with the leaders of both parties. the election did not change the balance of power in congress. democrats still control the u.s. senate, republicans keep control of the house of representatives. and the people of california voted to raise their taxes for grade schools and universities to be funded. governor jerry brown's proposition 30 increases the states sales tax by a quarter cent for the next four years. and also income taxes for the next seven years on those who earn more than a quarter million dollars. richmond's highly contested soda tax went down in defeat. voters rejected measure n which would have imposed a penny per ounce tax on sugary drinks. if passed richmond would have been the first in the nation with such a tax.

the american beverage association did contribute more than $2 million to help defeat that. also on its way to defeat proposition 37 the initiative that would have required labeling for all foods that have been genetically engineered. right now it's losing 53-47%. president obama will head back to the white house today knowing that is where he will spend the next four years. carla is in chicago this morning where the president gave his acceptance speech last night and joins us on the phone. good morning, carla. caller: good morning, pam. >> so one of my first thoughts was we could see a very different president obama since this term he doesn't have to worry about reelection. what do you think about that? caller: well the president last night in chicago delivered a message that gave some thoughts about where he goes from now. he talked about reaching across the aisle immediately even reaching out to governor

romney. he said america is not as divided as the politics and so his message was look, the voters made it clear last night they want some action and he intends to begin work on sort of at least helping that divide heal. republicans in this elected got a message also. their demographic shows they need to make some changes to reaching out to groups like hispanics, women, and youth. they only got 27% of the hispanic vote. and across the country that was a message to them. at this point obama is in the white house. he has to work with them. some of the republicans are talking tough. after the mandate last night i think they have some soul searching to do also. as the second term begins. >> the republicans still controlling the house though and a lot of talk about trying to get along and get things passed. how do you think that will be

joining us. time now 5:48. one day after working to get victims of the super storm sandy to the polls, officials on the east coast have a new big problem. a winter storm a nor'easter expected to hit that region later today could cause more flooding and more beach erosion. new york city police are using loud speakers. they are urging people in low lying areas to get out to evacuate. this storm could also dump up to a foot of snow in yautias are still dealing with power outages. back here at home a santa clara elementary school principal accused of selling drugs is due in court this morning to enter a plea. police arrested erik dean lewis back in september after they say he offered drugs to an under cover police officer. a search of his home in san francisco turned up meth, ecstasy pills and other charges. he's been charged with five felonies. after his arrest he was placed

on unpaid administrative leave. in a couple hours jury deliberations resume in if -- he is accused of assaulting seven women. if he's convicted dozer could face live in prison. we are getting closer to 6:00. it could be getting a little more crowded on the roads. let's check in with sal. >> good morning, to you. traffic is doing well around the bay area. we've had a couple of things. let's take a look at what we have now the traffic on highway 4 does look pretty good coming up to the willow pass grade. and it is going to look good all the way at concord. so we don't have a lot going on. we do have a look now at the bay bridge toll plaza and the traffic here is looking pretty good. no major problems here. there is a new crash in san jose south bay area. this is actually a little closer to campbell. southbound 17 south of hamilton avenue on the onramp there.

maryland. and voters in minnesota rejected a ban on gay marriage. analysts say it's the first time gay marriage supporters have won at the polls indicating a major shift in public opinion. two ballot measures legalizing recreational marijuana passed in colorado and washington. washington states initiative 5:02 would credit create a system of state licensed marijuana growers and retail stores where adults could buy up to an ounce of marijuana. it would also establish a blood test limit for driving under the influence. many legal experts though expect the justice department will sue to block i-502. 62% of voters voted no on mc. let's check in with sal. sal, are they awake at the toll plaza in >> they are awake dave and pam. right now traffic is moving along a little bit it's good.
